This site is no longer an active blog but a permanent archive of two decades of Tigers writing.

This blog launched more than 20 years ago, in March 2006, right as the Tigers’ renaissance coincided with the golden age of blogging. For a few years there was a podcast too. Yes. In 2006. I interviewed Tigers beat writers, announcers, authors, my Dad, and George Kell.

I like to think I’m pretty savvy on the tech side. Unfortunately, I also thought I’d backed up all of the podcast audio files. I hadn’t. Thankfully, a few survived, including the George Kell episode.

The glory years of The Daily Fungo were the Tigers’ best seasons from 2006 to about 2014. There wasn’t much to write about afterward, and I had no interest in chronicling mediocre Tigers teams. At least current-day mediocre ones.

That’s when I pivoted to an earlier era: the years when I became a Tigers fan and followed those teams with enthusiasm and obsession, from 1977—the year I attended my first Tigers game—to about 1989, when the afterglow of the 1984 team faded as the ’89 team amassed losing streaks (they had 26*).

Still! Those were my teams and I began writing about them. In 2024, I wrote a daily recap of each game of the head-spinning ’84 season.

Except for the rare occasion of inspiration, say, another World Series championship in my lifetime, The Daily Fungo is retired but it will live on here as a permanent archive. When the mood strikes, I will fix broken photo links, and polish up the longer stuff.
